OnePlus 12R - As Seen In The First Impression

The introduction of the OnePlus 12R took place at the Smooth Beyond Belief event in New Delhi, India, alongside its flagship counterpart, the OnePlus 12. While not boasting the exact top-tier specifications as the larger model, the OnePlus 12R stands as a formidable device. Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, a flagship chip from the previous year, it shares a resemblance with the OnePlus 11R. Having spent some time with the new OnePlus 12R, here are my initial impressions.

OnePlus 12R Specifications

Feature Details
Processor Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
Display 6.78-inch ProXDR AMOLED
Camera 50MP Primary, 8MP Ultra-wide, 2MP Macro
Storage 8GB RAM + 128GB / 16GB RAM + 256GB
Battery 5,500mAh, 100W Fast Charging
Connectivity Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 7, NFC, IR Blaster
Operating System Android 14-based OxygenOS 14.0

Design

Out of the box, the OnePlus 12R provides a comfortable grip, thanks to its slightly curved back and front. Featuring a metal frame and slim bezels encompassing the front, the phone showcases the iconic Alert Slider in its original position. The power and volume buttons are situated on the right edge, while the bottom houses a USB Type-C port, speaker, microphone, and SIM card slot. The top of the phone includes an IR blaster, a second mic, and an additional speaker.

Available in iron grey and cool blue colors, the Cool Blue variant, which I had the opportunity to explore, tends to attract fingerprints. On the other hand, the Gray variant with its matte finish is likely more resistant to fingerprints. Using a case can help preserve the pristine appearance of the phone's rear panel.

Display

The front of the OnePlus 12R boasts a spacious 6.78-inch fourth-generation AMOLED LTPO panel, referred to as ProXDR by the company. Surrounded by slim bezels, the display integrates an in-display fingerprint scanner. Offering adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate, 1.5K resolution, up to 1000 Hz touch response rate, Dolby Vision, HDR 10+, and 1,600 nits of brightness (4,500 nits peak), the display is safeguarded by Corning's Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Additionally, it possesses an IP64 rating, allowing usage in the rain.

Equipped with a 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 primary rear camera, the OnePlus 12R features a familiar camera module seen in its predecessor, the OnePlus 11. The rear camera setup includes a 50-megapixel primary sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide unit, and a 2-megapixel Macro sensor. While further testing is needed to assess the camera's capabilities, the primary camera has exhibited impressive performance in daylight shots. The front camera is a 16-megapixel sensor.

RAM and ROM options of OnePlus 12R

The OnePlus 12R is available in India in two configurations - 8GB RAM + 128GB storage or 16GB RAM + 256GB storage. Both variants feature fast LPDDR5X RAM, with the 256GB version having the additional advantage of UFS 4.0 storage.

Connectivity:

Connectivity options encompass Bluetooth 5.3, dual-band Wi-Fi 7, NFC, an IR blaster, and standard GPS options.

Battery and Charging:

Featuring a substantial 5,500mAh battery, the OnePlus 12R supports 100W fast charging, with the charger included in the package. Notably, wireless charging is absent in the OnePlus 12R, reserved for the OnePlus 12.

Additional Features:

The phone comes with a case and a pre-applied screen protector. The dual speakers on the device deliver impressive audio, being both loud and capable of producing bass.

Operating System:

Running on Android 14-based OxygenOS 14.0, the software exhibits minimal bloatware, offering numerous OnePlus-exclusive customization options. However, it lacks some of the AI features present in phones like the Google Pixel 7a and the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S24.
